I have used Steven MacLeay’s services for the past 13 years. If Steven says he will meet you at 9:00 AM usually by 8:45 he is knocking on your door. I know that must seem unusual for a contractor but that is the way he runs his business. Professional from the get-go, yet aware of budgetary restraints. At times Steven was the one who guided both the architect and me. He is one of those rare contractors who has really good taste. He listened, developed an understanding of what we were looking for and then made suggestions. For example, we have a 100-year old standing seam metal roof. It was Steven who found the company who restored a similar room on the US Mint in Washington, received the training and then did the job himself. I don’t feel you could find any better in the Berkshires.
I found Steven and his crew to be exceptionally conscientious and reliable in the work they did at my house. Besides the original work I hired him for, Steven was able to recommend a few additional, highly necessary, repairs and improvements to get the job done right. His prices were competitive, and in a market where reliable, high-quality contractors are tough to find, well worth the money. I would highly recommend Steven and Sacred Oak Homes to anyone!
As an architect, it was a pleasure and a huge peace of mind to have Steven and his crew carry out the construction of one of my projects. Steven is a consummate professional who never hesitated to call me for clarifications or to offer suggestions that saved the clients money or time, never compromising the quality or aesthetics of the project. I highly recommend him.
Steven is more than just a general contractor – he is a multi-talented carpenter, a generous collaborator, and an artist. He worked with me, never imposing anything but helping me find the best ways to realize my ideas with the latest technologies and creative solutions. If you can get Steven, you’re in luck!
We hired Sacred Oak Homes for a large gut renovation that spanned several months and he and his team completed the project with excellence. We very much appreciated the on-going and open regular communication and Steven’s expertise and advice along the way. We have been very pleased with the team’s professionalism, attention to detail (tile work, flooring, carpentry, electric, etc.), caring nature and commitment to doing things the right way with the right materials. We wouldn’t hesitate to use them again and would highly recommend them to anyone!
I have known Steven for almost a decade. I selected him to build my new home in Mount Washington, MA… I felt strongly that he was someone who understood what I had in mind [and had] the ability to execute the tasks necessary to coincide with my expectations. I now live in a finely built home with quality craftsmanship. Today I take great pride to call Steven my friend. He is a man of his word, a highly capable craftsperson, and a well-organized professional who cares about what he produces and most of all to satisfy the demands and desires of his clients. If Steven is your choice, you won’t be disappointed.
We found Steven’s ideas and work to be thoughtful, creative, thorough and now quite beautiful. I originally spoke with Steven about a new kitchen. He patiently went over ideas for the plan and materials. The results are spectacular including his thought of having a large picture window with a stained glass window above it over our kitchen sink. His eye is toward a simple elegance using natural materials and quality workmanship. Anyone will be lucky to have him as their contractor and I look forward to contacting him for our next project.
Steven— We often think of you as we enjoy our Great Barrington home immensely and are grateful that your workmanship transformed an ordinary house with good bones to an elegant residence. You provided a level of competence and trust during the planning of our project that was important, especially because we needed you to execute the project in our absence. After carefully planning the project with you, we trusted you to work independently to complete the kitchen while we were away for the winter. Dick reminds me that a day doesn’t go by without him being pleased with the way the house turned out. We can recommend you without hesitation, because of the quality of your work, thorough planning process, trustworthiness, responsiveness to concerns and creative problem-solving. Your crew and sub-contractors were excellent. We will certainly call on you in the future if we have a construction project or problem.
Steven and his team took an ordinary, poorly built kitchen and created a beautiful, sophisticated space for my family. The finish work was done with an artisan’s touch and every tiny detail attended to. I would highly recommend them for any type of project from small to very, very large.
Steven MacLeay is a fine contractor for general building needs. His creative attention to the overall technical details of construction is advantageous whether building a complete structure or creating an addition or renovation, both exterior and interior. Steven’s knowledge of contemporary construction and design norms, including for energy advantages, forms a compelling body of experience upon which he draws for any construction project. I would highly recommend Steven MacLeay.
I made the acquaintance of Mr. MacLeay with regard to extensive work I wished to have done to my home. Steven was able to intelligently discuss with me the changes I had in mind and, more importantly, was able to offer some alternate possibilities to meet my desired ends. Steven was very understanding and cooperative in bringing the work along. I think at least two of his contributions to the project are important assets to his capability to get such work done and to satisfy the client. One of these skills is his experience. He has worked with a number of clients in the area and is very understanding and responsive to the needs and expectations of those who ask him for help. The other important contribution he brings is a basic intelligence, heavily leavened with common sense. I highly recommend Steven MacLeay for any matter of this general nature. I am sure you will find him a dependable and skilled craftsman.
I have been a client of Steven’s for more than 5 years. We have a home in the Berkshires and Steven’s construction/carpentry and home repair services have been used by us many times during these years. He is trustworthy (that is why he has the key to our home). He meets his schedules. He meets his estimates. He is very clean – leaves the work project with no dirt or debris. He is courteous and pleasant. He is technically innovative and very knowledgeable of construction methods. Incidentally, my credentials (to make these statements) are that I am a licensed Professional Engineer (NY) and a Certified Management Consultant. His “paperwork” has always been done in a professional manner. His persona is that of a sincere, knowledgeable, articulate, well-spoken man – he can represent a product or service well in his work. I would recommend Steven to anyone interested in having him represent them or utilizing his professional services. We have recommended him to friends who have been pleased with his services.
I had the pleasure of having Steven do work on my house. The project was not an overly extensive one, but important to us nonetheless. I had trouble getting call backs from others involved in the job, but not from Steven. Steven called me back within 24 hours of each call, and when it came down to it he worked on Sunday to get the job done. He was timely, efficient, tidy, and even fed the cat when we were out. I look forward to having him complete other carpentry jobs that come up in the future, and would highly recommend him to my friends and family. Thanks Steven.
As the owner’s project manager, working on a 19th-century textile mill revitalization project, I had the pleasure of working with Steven MacLeay of Sacred Oak Homes. Steven is a true professional possessing broad knowledge related to construction. His ability to interpret architectural drawings that at times were mere sketches was instrumental in completing the stabilization phase of a two-story bridge spanning the Housatonic River. This work required adjusting to existing conditions and making decisions on the fly in order to complete the project successfully and on schedule. Steven worked effectively by himself, but also knew when to bring in additional help to handle heavy timber or when working safely alone might be an issue. His work was always of high quality, and budgets were closely adhered to throughout the project. Steven’s many years of experience and first-rate work in construction and renovations made him the right choice for the job. We look forward to working with him again on future projects.
Steven MacLeay and his company completed a historic renovation of the cupola on the Lenox Town Library in 2007. Steven has been doing repair and maintenance work on the town’s library copper standing-seam roof and copper gutter system, and I couldn’t be more pleased. I find him easy to work with, open, honest and very helpful. His suggestions have made a difference in preserving this historic building for generations to come.
