I have used Steven MacLeay’s services for the past 13 years. When I have recommended him to others, which has been often, one of the things that I usually say is, " If Steven says he will meet you at 9:00 am usually by 8:45 he is knocking on your door."  I know that must seem unusual for a contractor but that is the way he runs his business. Professional from the get go, yet aware of budgetary restraints. What I did find most helpful, is that he at times was the one who guided both the architect and me. He is one of those rare contractors who has really good taste. He listened, developed an understanding of what we were looking for and then made suggestions. I have to say, although I take the credit for the design of our fabulous kitchen, many of the elements in it in, terms of design, were Steven's idea. For example, we have a 100-year old standing seam metal roof. It was Steven who found the company who restored a similar room on the US Mint in Washington, received the training and then did the job himself. I don't feel you could find any better in the Berkshires.

We hired Steven to complete necessary and complex repairs and upgrades to our 1957 Berkshire cottage, and to super-insulate and upgrade our 1972 addition. Steven does beautiful work, meticulously and with thorough knowledge of the best available materials and techniques. We appreciated timely and clear communication at each phase of the project. I was also grateful for his ability to locate problems that I had been unaware of. As these were corrected, our house is now more sound and more energy efficient. Steve’s determination to overcome difficult repair situations, and his honesty made working with him a pleasure.

Steven— We often think of you as we enjoy our Great Barrington home immensely and are grateful that your workmanship transformed an ordinary house with good bones to an elegant residence. You provided a level of competence and trust during the planning of our project that was important, especially because we needed you to execute the project in our absence. We waited another year to renovate the kitchen, so that I could be sure that the configuration would work for us.  After carefully planning the project with you, we trusted you to work independently to complete the kitchen while we were away for the winter. We made good decisions together, and we have been very pleased with the outcome. Dick reminds me that a day doesn't go by without him being pleased with the way the house turned out. We can recommend you without hesitation, because of the quality of your work, thorough planning process, trustworthiness, responsiveness to concerns and creative problem solving. Your crew and sub-contractors were excellent. We will certainly call on you in the future if we have a construction project or problem.

I made the acquaintance of Mr. MacLeay with regard to extensive work I wished to have done to my home. Steven was able to intelligently discuss with me the changes I had in mind and, more importantly, was able to offer some alternate possibilities and to suggest changes in the details to meet my desired ends. As part of this process, he offered to use his computer for use in drafting some of the plans under discussion in order to appropriately convey the effects the proposed construction would have on the overall structure of my home. Steven was very understanding and cooperative in bringing the work along. I feel that he was most understanding and tolerant of my own changes of mind about some of the details and he certainly was most helpful to me in making decisions about the work in progress. I think at least two of his contributions to the project are important assets to his capability to get such work done and to satisfy the client. One of these skills is his experience. He has worked with a number of clients in the area and is very understanding and responsive to the needs and expectations of those who ask him for help. The other important contribution he brings is a basic intelligence, heavily leavened with common sense. I highly recommend Steven MacLeay for any matter of this general nature. I am sure you will find him a dependable and skilled craftsman.

I have known Steven for almost a decade. It started when I selected him to build my new home in Mount Washington, Massachusetts located in the southern part of the Berkshires. I am unsure as to the precise reason that prompted me to choose him, but I felt strongly that he was someone who understood what I had in mind as well as the ability to execute the tasks necessary to coincide with my expectations. During the next 20 months I wasn't disappointed and now live in a finely built home with quality craftsmanship. Steven and I have stayed in contact with each other and today I take great pride to call him my friend. Steven is a man of his word, a highly capable craftsperson, and a well organized professional  who cares about what he produces and most of all to satisfy the demands and desires of his clients. If Steven is your choice, you won’t be disappointed.

I have been a client of Steven's for more than 5 years. We have a home in the Berkshires and Steven's construction/carpentry and home repair services have been used by us many times during these years. He is trustworthy (that is why he has the key to our home). He meets his schedules. He meets his estimates. He is very clean - leaves the work project with no dirt or debris. He is courteous and pleasant. He is innovative technically and very knowledgeable of construction methods. Incidentally, my credentials (to make these statements) are that I am a a licensed Professional Engineer (NY) and a Certified Management Consultant. His "paperwork" has always been done in a professional manner. His persona is that of a sincere, knowledgeable, articulate, well-spoken man - he can represent a product or service well in his work. I would recommend Steven to anyone interested in having him represent them or utilizing his professional services. We have recommended him to friends who have been pleased with his services.

I had the pleasure of having Steven do work on my house. The project was not an overly extensive one, but important to us nonetheless. I had trouble getting call backs from others involved in the job, but not from Steven. Steven called me back within 24 hours of each call, and when it came down to it he worked on Sunday to get the job done. He was timely, efficient, tidy, and even fed the cat when we were out. I look forward to having him complete other carpentry jobs that come up in the future, and would highly recommend him to my friends and family. Thanks Steven.

Commercial testimonials

As the owner’s project manager, working on a 19th-century textile mill revitalization project, I had the pleasure of working with Steven MacLeay of Sacred Oak Homes. Steven is a true professional possessing broad knowledge related to construction. His ability to interpret architectural drawings that at times were mere sketches was instrumental in completing the stabilization phase of a two-story bridge spanning the Housatonic River. This work required adjusting to existing conditions and making decisions on the fly in order to complete the project successfully and on schedule. Steven worked effectively by himself, but also knew when to bring in additional help to handle heavy timber or when working safely alone might be an issue. His work was always of high quality, and budgets were closely adhered to throughout the project. Steven’s many years of experience and first-rate work in construction and renovations made him the right choice for the job. We look forward to working with him again on future projects.

Steven MacLeay and his company completed a historic renovation of the cupola on the Lenox Town Library in 2007. Steven has been doing repair and maintenance work on the town's library copper standing-seam roof and copper gutter system, and I couldn't be more pleased. I find him easy to work with, open, honest and very helpful. His suggestions have made a difference in preserving this historic building for the generations to come.
